Canada, Camps and Cancer

If you read my blogs, you know this is the first entry in quite a while. It’s all because of Canada, camps and cancer.

Our summer vacation commenced in Canada. We went to Vancouver, BC several days ahead of our family-wide Alaskan cruise, celebrating my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.

I could have stayed in Vancouver two weeks. The weather, the stunning beauty of the land and seascapes, the endless variety of food and activities... rank Vancouver high on my list of favorite cities.

Soon the rest of our party arrived, and we departed for our cruise on the magnificently-appointed Celebrity Millennium. Seven days, five ports, glaciers, eagles, whale spouts and tails, baked Alaska, fabulous entertainment, too-tight living quarters, the magical Hubbard glacier: this was our week.

Too soon, we docked and departed for Anchorage. Visiting this all-American city, so far from the continental US but so full of Americana made for a most memorable July 4th. The downtown parade exhibited all of the small-town gusto and pride of Mayberry RFD, but with unique-to-Alaska touches, like reindeer.

Too soon, it was back home and off to camps for the kids. Pottery, fishing, engineering, photography, Christian sleepaway camps competed for my kids’ (and my) time.

But suddenly, life suspended when my father had a seizure and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Most of the tumor was removed on August 6, and he has made an incredible recovery. He began chemo and radiation this week. Though his cancer is not medically curable, we covet your prayers for his continued health and well-being through his treatments and far beyond.

I am so grateful for God’s good timing. How dreadful it would have been to deal with my dad’s unexpected illness so far from home. And how kind it was that his tumor was revealed after the trip. Surely such a trip would have been difficult, if not impossible because of this cancer.

Not only has God been kind, but His body has worked exactly as scripture describes. Galatians 5:13 says “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” John 13:35 goes on to say “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

My parents live several hours away from my husband and our family, and several of their friends have been living epistles of Galatians 5:13 and John 13:35. Isn’t that just like God, no matter whether we’re in Canada or at camp or fighting cancer, to prove that His Word is true? And isn’t that just like God, that even in our in moments of greatest concern, He sends tangible, human reminders of His care?

Summer 2009 turned out to be crazy. But no matter whether we were in Canada, at camp or dealing with cancer, God showed us over and over that He is here, He is kind, and He cares.

Playing with Fire: George Tiller and Carrie PreJean

I know, this is the oddest of comparisons. But here’s the connection: God has warned both of these people. George apparently did not heed the warnings. Carrie, for the time being, apparently has.

George Tiller was directly responsible, by his own hands or the hands of those who worked for him, for some 60,000 abortions. It’s hard to believe every one of those abortions was a deformed child that endangered the life of his or her mother. In fact, I don’t know one single person in my... wide circle of friends, relatives and acquaintances that has ever had a pregnancy that truly endangered the mother’s life. It’s a logical fallacy: a natural process of life does not also endanger one’s life. The remedy for any of the various conditions that can be temporarily harmful to the mother (such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes) is always delivery…not murder…of the baby.

The point of this blog is not to argue the finer points of abortion, but to comment on whether or not George Tiller heeded God’s warnings.

Several years ago, George Tiller was shot by an abortion protestor. Two years later, his Wichita clinic was bombed.

Did he get the message?

I’ve never been the recipient of gunshot wounds or had my home or workplace bombed, but I’m pretty sure I would look for a deeper meaning behind such actions. Rather than just blaming a deranged lunatic, I’d do a little soul-searching.

Not only did he experience violence against himself and his chosen profession, but he was also frequently identified through prayer, media and viral email campaigns as a primary nemesis in the fight for unborn life.

So…did he get the message? That he was playing with fire?

Apparently not.

Abortion has been decried as murder by the founders of the Church since as long ago as the first and second century.

So despite George’s presence in church at the time of his death, he didn’t get God’s heart. God didn’t cause George’s murder, but like He endlessly warns in His book, He allows us to visit the ends of our actions.

May God have mercy on George, just as He has mercy on me, a dreadful sinner.

In somewhat lighter terms, Carrie PreJean was also given a warning.

The reigning Miss California nobly stood up against the often vile and violent gay-marriage lobby in this country, she had her wings singed in the process.

Because reality is that you can’t stand for God and immodestly use your temple at the same time.

Carrie’s a smart girl. She played her time of persecution well, she’s making good use of the time since her vindication. But God allowed her to get burned. God allowed Carrie to be publicly humiliated by her barely un-pornographic pictures because of her quest for fame. God allowed Carrie to choose to walk the way of the world and learn the hard way that treading into territory where it’s darn near impossible to honor God will leave you dirtied. Burned. Damaged in the process.

So while we pray for the repose of George’s soul, let’s also pray for his family, that they heed God’s warnings. Let’s pray that they get the heart of God, that God values all life, not just the life of the wanted. Jesus wasn’t a wanted pregnancy. Shudder to think if He would have made it to birth if He were born today.

And let’s pray that Carrie carries on to fully glorify her Lord. Let’s pray she uses the platform thrust upon her to turn the hearts of at least 60,000 towards God. Let’s pray that she’s had enough playing with fire.

Taxing Abortion

2009 may well be recalled as the year of the unending tax increases. Pennies here, dollars there, pretty soon it adds up to real money. And these tax proposals are getting personal: someone wants to raise taxes on my beloved Diet Pepsi!

Last Sunday President Obama gave his highly-anticipated and much-protested speech at Notre Dame’s commencement. In his speech, he encouraged students... to “…work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions…reduce unintended pregnancies….make adoption more available.”

While we’re in this season of tax increases, how ‘bout putting our money where your mouth is, Mr. President? How about raising taxes on abortions?

One of the main reasons for the glut of abortions is that they are relatively inexpensive. Planned Parenthood’s website says first trimester abortions cost between $350 and $900, depending on your location. To put that into the language of youth, one abortion equals the cost of two pair of fashion-forward sneakers. If you make minimum wage, it’s less than two weeks’ work to get an abortion. An abortion equals one car payment, one prom weekend, one spa day, one plane ticket.

Many women use abortion as birth control just because it’s so cheap.

Crass to think of abortion this way, but abortion is all about economics. A pregnant woman determines that the value of her dreams and plans is greater than the value of the life thrown away.

Lest you think I have no heart, I’m on the board of Northfield Ministries. We are working hard to provide options to young women who experience unplanned pregnancy. We know too well how difficult unplanned pregnancy can be.

So President Obama, I ask you this: do you truly want abortions to be rare? Do you truly want Americans to take responsibility for their actions? Do you really believe in social justice?

Then tax the devil out of abortions.

Remember all the new things we’re taxing and limiting: struggling companies, CEO bonuses, small business owners. Capital gains tax rates will be changing next year. All in the name of eliminating greed and graft.

So if you really want to change this culture and foster personal responsibility, we should make all immoral behavior more costly.

Double the price of abortions. Tax them equal to their cost.

Is this troubling? Is it because it’s blood money? Blood money never sits quite right.
But if we really want abortion to be rare, it has to be more costly.

Just like greedy CEO’s who have lost their ill-gotten bonuses, there has to be a financial sacrifice for moral messages to stick.

So maybe, just maybe, when those contemplating abortion have to pay more will they begin to realize the great cost paid by the helpless child whose life is thrown away.

Be Careful: Baby Killing is Contagious!

It was one of those news reports I couldn’t read. The headline said enough.

“Man Throws Baby From Car.”

My body reacts physically to incredible evil. Something happens when knowledge of the unspeakable hits my temporal lobe, the place where we all experience God in our brains.

A sensation not unlike electric shock shot down the back left side of my skull, just reading the headline. Later in the day, I heard someone on television say that the three-month old baby boy died.

A wasted life, literally thrown away.

Social commentators will spend some time analyzing why and how this happened, but the truth is that baby killing is contagious.

Nonsense, you may think. But is it really? I contend that baby killing is just as contagious as swine flu.

Malcolm Gladwell talked about what causes... epidemics in his outstanding book, The Tipping Point. He gave as example an epidemic of suicide in Micronesia. Suicide, an individual act, should have no inherent ability to be contagious. But Gladwell argues that social rules govern actions like suicide, causing more suicides shortly after the first notable event.

History proves this is true for many destructive actions, such as school shootings. Educators and police braced themselves and publicly warned against copycats following events like the Virginia Tech massacre or Columbine.

Baby killing is no different. Only this time, the government of our country establishes the social rules by officially sanctioning baby killing.

Before you think this is nonsense, listen to Gladwell’s words on the epidemic of suicide: “The kind of contagion…isn’t something rational or even necessarily conscious. It’s not like a persuasive argument. It’s something much more subtle than that…The decision by someone famous to take his or her own life has the same effect: it gives other people, particularly those vulnerable to suggestion…permission to engage in a deviant act as well.”

The United States government decreed 36 years ago that abortion is legal. What group is more influential in the entire secular world than the US government?

And what has happened in these past 36 years? Those who are vulnerable to the suggestion that there is nothing wrong with abortion have had abortions. Those even more vulnerable to suggestion have unconsciously assimilated that no longer is this country about the right to life for every citizen, it is only about the right to life for those who are wanted, those who aren’t in the way.

And so, a precious baby boy, who just happened to be in the way of an impulsive unthinking man-child, is thrown to his death on an interstate.

Gladwell also writes that not only are we sensitive to the subtle suggestions made by the influential, but we are also sensitive to context. We are sensitive to the broken windows in our environment, and our behavior degrades in their presence.

We can ignore the broken window of abortion, and continue to see crimes like this and the rest of the incredible violence in our culture. Or, we can fix the problem of abortion, through concentrating our prayers, resources and voices against it.

Before you lament the near-lock pro-abortion forces have in the Senate, Congress, the judiciary and the White House, remember that God values life. (Sorry Nancy Pelosi, abortion has always been considered the taking of a life in both Judaism and Christianity). And He hears our prayers. Church, we can change this.

William Wilberforce worked his entire public life to end slavery in Britain, and it took that long to accomplish his goal. Was it worth the ridicule and sacrifice? I suspect the multiple millions of descendants of slaves would say so. I suspect the Church would say so.

God doesn’t care much about our comfort, but He does care about how we help and value our fellow man. So get into the fight. Take a stand against this seemingly unconquerable giant. Offer help to girls with unplanned pregnancies. And expect unexpected victories in the battle.

I predict that one of the victories, an unintended consequence of the death of abortion will be a resurgence of civility, responsibility, and morality. I predict that, with the death of abortion, peace will prevail and the new contagion will be righteousness.

And I predict that with the death of abortion, mercifully, there will be no more headlines proclaiming evil that electrocutes the brain.

Watch out for this new disease!!!!

Didya ever wonder why….

…our government stops the torture of our mortal enemies yet permits the torture of unborn babies?

…our government is on the cusp of granting fabricated rights to an extremely vocal minority while silencing the legitimate free-speech rights…and sincere religious beliefs…of the majority?

…our government prevents prayer and restricts the Bible and religious after-school clubs in public schools, but many formerly-Communist states do not?

…our government is digging deep into debt when the first thing you do with your own money in times of crisis is to save?

…our government is raising taxes, nationalizing banks and car companies and reducing prosperity when countries we consider inconsequential have enacted flat taxes and are rejoicing in their new jobs, wealth and productivity?

The answer to all these questions is (drumroll... please): a disease! It’s called “Cantseetheforestforthetreesitis.” This disease has been around for millennia, but has recently surged across America. Though cases have been found in all fifty states, much of the outbreak has been contained to Washington, DC. The disease is airborne, highly contagious and mostly spread by the spewing of hot, non-sensical air.

If you find yourself agreeing with any of the aforementioned positions of our government, quickly turn off the television, throw away newspapers and read the Bible, Genesis 1. The only known cure for this dread disease is in the hands of the God big enough to create the universe.

Possible side effects of the cure for Cantseetheforestforthetreesitis: inner peace, persecution by your diseased co-workers and neighbors, being listed as a terrorist on the Homeland Security website.

Relapse: can occur without vigilant pursuit of God. Recommended daily intake of scripture to prevent recurrence.

Vaccination against this dread disease anticipated when Christ returns to earth. Stay tuned to the Bible for more information about vaccine availability.

What would you do if you knew the Anti-Christ?

Okay, now I’m firmly in whacko territory. No one really believes all that stuff about the anti-Christ and apocalypse and angels breaking seals, right? Well, count me in the same camp as Carrie PreJean, Miss California-USA. I actually DO believe the Bible, and have spent a substantial chunk of my life learning its obvious lessons and the ones less-so.

What if the cultural changes in our lifetimes have been a portent of the appearance of Mr. Evil? Hang with me for a minute and think about what has happened since, say 1950, the second half of the 20th century.

Our country led the way and the entire world followed... suit into the sexual rebellion. The sexual rebellion blurred the lines of family with skyrocketing out-of-wedlock births. The sexual rebellion erased the lines of family with the multiplied millions of legally-sanctioned abortions.

Family has always been so important to God. He sees us as individuals, but He also sees and watches over and judges us as families. The endless genealogies in the Old Testament were there in part to prove the bloodline of Christ. What do our scattered bloodlines really represent in God’s economy? That we are the living epistles of our time.

And what if all this moral lawlessness has been part of a grand design to obscure the heritage of the Man of the World who will soon take his wrongful place at the helm of power?

No, I am most definitely NOT talking about Barack Obama, despite the shrouded mystery surrounding the actual situs of birth.

No, I’m proposing something more radical.

For years, a wide swath of Bible scholars have drawn a blueprint of the ‘Man of Sin’. According to interpretations of Biblical passages implying his origin within a revived Roman Empire, he will arise from governance much like what we see in the modern European Union.

But what if instead of being an elected politician, the Son of Perdition will be a business leader, with ancestry in Europe?

Much was made in The DaVinci Code about the Merovingian bloodline. For most of Europe’s history the royals were absolutely obsessed with the purity of their bloodline, much in the same way that the Jews have been for most of their history.

Now I wouldn’t want to be Dan Brown on Judgment Day, but maybe he was on to something he didn’t realize. Maybe a sinister International Merovingian Man of Mystery will soon arise with a radical solution to the economic struggles that impact the entire planet.

This is not a plot for a new Austin Powers movie. No, this man has a far more sinister plan. And this guy can change persona and strategy if he thinks he’s been found out.

I kinda think this guy is too smart to show up in a three-piece suit, fresh from the Bilderberg conference, and announce that he’s the new leader of the world. No, I think he’s going to be more obscure, less obvious, but no less powerful. I think he’s going to be seen by many, but known by almost none.

There is spiritual precedent for this blindness that will exist in the lives of many, even Christians. It may stem from terrible crises that weaken us and reveal that the foundations of our lives are not built upon Him but upon something temporal.

This precedent was evident in Jesus’ day: Commentary on Mark 7:27-30 says that many Jews lost God’s spiritual healing because they didn’t recognize Jesus for who he was. And conversely, many Gentiles received spiritual healing and salvation because they did recognize Jesus.

Since God acts with consistency, and based on what God has revealed about the Last Days, many of us who wear the moniker of Christian may be deceived as well. I pray not, but I fear so.

So back to the original question: what if you learn the identity of the anti-Christ? What are you going to do with the information? What if he’s your neighbor, your work associate, your elected leader, your friend?

Our most serious questions never change. God asks of every soul, What would you do with Jesus of Nazareth? And I fear ~ no, I know ~ that if we don’t answer that question, once and for all, then on the nearing day when we have to answer this question of another, of one bent on our destruction, we may not have the right answer about Jesus Christ.

Our answer may be a shrug of the shoulders. A momentary stab of fear. And then on with our day.

And just like dawning days of World War II, I fear millions will do nothing, spiritually signing away their souls to the one bent on their destruction since before the beginning of time.

So what would YOU do if you knew the identity of the anti-Christ?

Midnight on the Clock of Eternity

Daily the news reveals a seemingly never-ending litany of encroaching violations on individual liberty. From corporations semi-seized by the government (the government structuring corporate bankruptcies…isn’t that up to the management and shareholders?) to the philosophy of limitation by taxation, no commoner is safe from the clutches of the soulless monolith we call our government.

Seems we’re all kind of scratching our heads these days, wondering how this happened.

The answers are historical, simple, butterfly-effect in action. One little step in Washington can make significant waves in the local ponds in which we swim.

But even if we can answer the how, can we answer the why? Are our current economic woes the result of stupidity and greed, or something more sinister? I contend these are not the right questions...
I have an opinion. Opinions rather quickly turn into truth or error. I really do wish my opinion would prove to be wrong.

This is no prediction. It’s an observation. But there is an agenda at work in the seeming destruction of our economic world. And its origin is other worldly.

My opinion, which I desperately hope to be wrong, is also a question, which I know to be right. For the right question to ask is, “What time is it?”

It won’t help to look at your watch. To answer this question requires reading the sky, reading the weather, reading the cultural climate. It’s no longer five till 12. It’s midnight.

We are on the verge of seeing what has long been predicted. Many have suspected that we are the generation of apocalypto, and we are here.

Midnight on the clock of eternity, the point where the lawless one who seems like the blessed one will be revealed. If we’re at midnight, he must be around somewhere.

There’s always a prospect here. No one knows the day or hour of Christ’s return, and that certainly includes Satan. So he must always have a man waiting in the wings, doing the necessary groundwork to prepare for his revelation.

What if you knew he was here? Waiting for the cataclysm that would catapult him to worldwide fame and acceptance? What if you knew who he was?

Even if you don’t know, what are you going to do about this knowledge? It should change the way you live. Urgency should characterize every believer’s walk with Christ, like never before.

So for at least a couple of blogs, I’ll give you my thoughts on this latter chapter of the Great Story that has been written since before the beginning of time.

Tasteless TEAbag Tirades

By now most of you have heard of the hijinks at several major news outlets regarding the TEA party dissent on April 15. The sexual innuendo was so perverse that only major networks and media darlings could get away with it. That’s right…only the chosen few (Anderson Cooper, cough cough) could sandbag sodomy so succinctly, without severe sanctions.

Seems that when it comes to tasteless talk, commentators with a head for hedonism do it best.

Perversion used to be kept properly in the dark, but that was before 500 television channels and 24-hour news cycles. Now, we have grown so sophisticated and free from religious restraints that we can say nearly anything, anytime, anywhere, as long as it is offensive to the righteous.

But there is nothing new under the sun. After studying on these sophomoric seminal rants, I was reminded, quite appropriately, of Sodom.

Culturally, we know a little about...Sodom and Gomorrah. They were wicked cities, destroyed by ‘fire and brimstone’ from Heaven. Science would probably classify this as destruction by meteor or asteroid, but no matter, the source of the scorching was not man-made.

How do tasteless teabagging tirades and Sodom relate? Glad you asked. In the story of Sodom, found in Genesis 19, innocent angelic travelers come to meet Lot at his home near the fair city of Sodom. The travelers plan to go into the city and spend the night in the city square. Lot begs and pleads for the travelers not to do that.

Soon we learn the reason for Lot’s solicitation.

Men from Sodom hear about the visitors, and come to Lot’s home to seek sex with the strangers. Brave man that he was, Lot begged the Sodomites to leave the angel/men alone, quickly offering the services of his virgin daughters. (I keep hoping there’s more to this story that will be revealed in Heaven).

In verse nine, the sex-seeking Sodomites ordered Lot to stand aside, then chastised him for ‘judging’ them. They then declared they would treat Lot worse than the angel/men with whom they sought sexual satisfaction.
America, the story of Sodom was retold on April 15. The wisdom of the wise is being made foolish by the weaker vassals. And the wise, the intelligentsia, seek to destroy, to mock, to “know” the innocent so as to destroy them. The Sodomites sought sexual rape, but our media sought spiritual rape. Make no mistake, the mockery of the exercise of constitutional freedom is about domination and putting down and shutting up those who stand against unrighteous rule. Rape is, after all, a crime that declares power, rapist over raped, Sodomite over sodomized, Teabagging talking-head over polite TEA Party picketers.

Roll over, dying media. The weak righteous will rise, but the wisdom of the wise, otherwise known as foolishness in God’s sight, will be “shamed and nullified.” It’s time to wake up, smell the coffee…and taste the tea.

Happy TEA party day! As you enjoy paying your tax money today, remember that our taxes fund things like (1) national and international abortions (2) public education that produces cities filled with illiterate children (can you spell Detroit?) (3) bail-outs for businesses that are run like casinos and (4)frivolous projects that would be the first thing to go if this money were your personal money.
Here's a link to a 6-minute video that reminds us why and how this country was founded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeYscnFpEyA
As mentioned in an earlier blog, John Adams explicity stated that the American form of government can only succeed if it is in use by a godly and moral people. So American Church, the greatness of our nation rests on our shoulders. Second Chronicles 7:11 - 8:6 call to mind a time when governance worked. People, including the appointed leader, were humble before God. They followed God's commands, and the country was rebuilt. Stores and supplies and riches accumulated in this time. Christian America, it's not too late to learn this lesson from our spiritual history!
